Occupying the western blockfront between 44th and 45th streets, this black granite landmark is one of eight Durst commercial buildings actively tracking its energy performance with Energy Star. In 2002, Jody and Douglas Durst, anticipating the green building revolution, replaced some conventional cooling mechanisms in 1155 Avenue of the Americas with an innovative ice storage system. Each night, when energy costs are at their lowest, the system produces over 30,000 gallons of ice to cool the building the following day, thus easing the strain on an overtaxed electrical grid during peak hours.
A green building is simply more efficient, providing a better, more productive work environment.
